McDonald's employee arrested on terrorist threat charge

Posted: Updated:

Hinton Police acted quickly on Wednesday to prevent a possible shooting from happening at the McDonald's on Stokes Drive.

Ronald Atwell, 26, of Hinton was arrested for and charged with Threats of a Terrorist Act.  According to Chief Derek Snavely, Atwell had made several threats on Monday.  Atwell allegedly said that he would shoot everyone in the fast food restaurant on Sept. 4.  Police said that Atwell told employees to call in sick if they did not want to be killed.

Chief Snavely contacted the Summers County Prosecuting Attorney about the matter when he learned of it on Wednesday.  They decided that the threat was credible and arrested Atwell in the interest of public safety.

"You hear of situations like this all over the country and never expect something to happen in your area.  I'd like to think today we possibly prevented a tragedy," said Chief Snavely.

Atwell is being held in the Southern Regional Jail on a $25,000 bond.
