A job fair for area veterans with more than 70 vendors representing various businesses and organizations from throughout the northern part of West Virginia brought in hundreds of people.

The event was organized by Rep. David McKinley, R-W.Va., along with House Speaker Tim Miley, D-Harrison, Delegates Richard Iaquinta, D-Harrison, Ron Fragale, D-Harrison, Danny Hamrick, R-Harrison, and also Senators Sam Cann, D-Harrison and Doug Facemire, D-Braxton.

Employers with immediate openings, ranging from energy companies to health care to security participated, and nearly 200 veterans took part, with several walking away from the event newly employed.

"Helping veterans find jobs is simply the right thing to do," McKinley said in a news release. "That's why this event and others like it are so important.

"They bring together veterans trained with a strong work ethic and values that prospective employers look for in their workforce."

McKinley sponsored a similar job fair in Morgantown last year.

"Our veterans have served this country honorably to make America a safer place," he said. "We owe it to them to give them a hand when they return."

According to information from McKinley's office, the unemployment rate for post-9/11 veterans is 9.9 percent, and it's 12.5 percent for female veterans.
