The Houston-based company said in its weekly report Friday that 1,361 rigs were exploring for oil and 401 for gas. Six were listed as miscellaneous. A year ago there were 1,864 active rigs.

Of the major oil- and gas-producing states, Texas gained 12 rigs, Pennsylvania gained three, Louisiana gained two and California and Wyoming each gained one.

Oklahoma lost six rigs, New Mexico lost four, Alaska lost two and Colorado lost one. Arkansas, Kansas, North Dakota, Ohio, Utah and West Virginia were unchanged.

The U.S. rig count peaked at 4,530 in 1981 and bottomed at 488 in 1999.
