UPDATE:

Mercer County parents were on high alert Monday after an increased presence of police stirred up rumors in the community.

59news has learned there was NO threat, instead simply a statement heard out of context.

Rumors of helicopters, violence and danger all swirling over social media as to why there was an increased security presence at PikeView Middle and High School on Monday.

But according to school officials none of that is true and this is what happened:

"Basically there was a situation at PikeView High School on Friday. there was a discussion among some kids. the discussion ended up in the office the administrators at PikeView office investigated and after talking to the students they realized there was really nothing to it. and from I guess social media got a hold of some of the discussion and we have the situation we had today," Mercer County Assistant Superintendent, Joe Turner said.

State police were called into investigate and their investigator supports what the school said. According to star police "it was a comment that was taken out if context... it reached the Internet and spread as a possible threat."

Other rumors stated several schools were put on lock down. But according to officials that was never the case. They said no Mercer County School was placed on lock down Monday.

Concerned Parents began calling the Central Office after a voice automotive message was sent to high school student's parents. The decision was made not to include the Middle School because the incident was in the high school. But school officials have this message for concerned parents.

"Our message is that we take safety as our top priority," Turner said.

It will be determined by the High School Principal off School Board members if police should return.

Students who showed up at PikeView Middle and PikeView High School on Monday were welcomed by the sight of law enforcement officers.  The West Virginia State Police said that Troopers were on site at the schools after they received word about threats of violence on two social media sites.

There were reports that someone posted on Facebook and Instagram about a shooting that would take place at the school on Monday or Tuesday.  In order to ensure the safety of the students, deputies and state troopers were on hand when students arrived.  State Police said that the threats have not been confirmed.

The investigation is still going on.  Anyone with information can call the State Police detachment in Princeton at 304-425-2101 or the Mercer County Sheriff's Office at 304-487-8364.
