CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -

A New York-based company is working on a proposal to build three solar-energy fields in Fayette and Greenbrier counties.

The project from Solar Thin Films Inc. could create West Virginia's first utility-scale solar electrical generation capacity.

The Charleston Gazette reports that the firm is working on plans for up to 35 megawatts of generation capacity at the three sites at Alderson, Crawley and Fayetteville.

The company said in late July that it reached an "agreement in principle" with a local landowner to design and build the $140 million project. Then said it had signed a contract on Sept. 13 for the solar fields.

Installation work is expected to begin before the end of the year, with all three sites finished within 18 months.
