KINGWOOD -

The Buckwheat Festival brings thousands of people to Preston County every year and takes hundred of volunteers to put together.

With horse pulls, carnival rides and you can't forget the food. Buckwheat cakes are a given, but the festival also includes other homemade staples, with homegrown ingredients, like pizza and more.

"Our famous homemade french fries which come from our locally grown farm here in Preston County," said Ethan Rouzee, captain, Kingwood Volunteer Fire Department. "Over two tons of potatoes are sliced to make the homemade french fries. For our buckwheat cakes the flour is grown somewhat local and ground local over in Hazelton at the mill. Over two tons of flour to make all the buckwheat cakes for the festival."

Thousands of potatoes are chopped right at the festival.

There is also a parade each day of the festival. Saturday was the "Farmer's Day parade' which had more than 100 cars, tractors, and floats. WBOY's Snowbird also made an appearance.

Most of the proceeds from the festival go to the Kingwood Volunteer Fire Department. They do split what they make with other volunteer organizations that help out. But the organizations aren't the only one's who benefit.

"It's very beneficial to our department, as well as the community in Kingwood," said Rouzee. "Folks get to park cars in their yard, they get to make some money. Other organizations put on buckwheat cake dinners and things of that nature this weekend to take advantage of the traffic coming into town. The whole county benefits not just the Kingwood Volunteer Fire Department."

The festival begins each year the last Thursday in September and ends on that Sunday.
