Former Smithers Fire Chief Timothy Whittington sentenced on embezzlement charges

The man who was responsible for the Smithers Volunteer Fire Department was back in court on Monday to learn his sentence for embezzling from the fire department.

Timothy Whittington went before the Fayette County Judge Paul Blake at 10:30 a.m.  Whittington pleaded guilty in August to charges of embezzlement.  During the plea hearing, Whittington admitted to paying around $4,000 worth of personal bills with the fire department's money.

Whittington was sentence to one to ten years in prison.  He was also ordered to pay back almost $3,500 to the Smithers Fire Department. Whittington is being held in the Southern Regional Jail until he can be taken to a state prison.
