Lewis County Golf Tournament Supports State Troopers

Posted: Updated:

For the second year, employees of McNeer, Highland, McMunn and Varner organized a golf tournament at Stonewall Resort in Lewis County to honor the memories of Corporal Marshall Bailey and Trooper Eric Workman, who were killed in the line of duty in August 2012. Organizer Tanya Cayton said the least they can do to express their gratitude is give some troopers a chance to unwind.

"They risk their lives every day for us, and they do an extreme, extremely dangerous job that most of us wouldn't have the courage to do, and so we want to give back to them and say thank you," Cayton said.

Companies from around the area purchased slots to enter teams in the tournament. Many of those companies gave the slots back to state troopers to allow them to enjoy their own day on the links. Stonewall golf pro Randy Hernly said the resort is happy to support the event.

"We want to give back to the state, we want to give back to the people of West Virginia, because these are not only our customers, but these are families of our employees, these are our friends, and it's just important," Hernly said.

Money from last year's event went to support the families of Corporal Bailey and Trooper Workman, but this year, Cayton said she wants to reach out further. Money raised this year will go into a special fund that will be used to help troopers' families in the future, should another similar incident unfold. Golfer Mike Brown joined the troopers on the course, and he said that's something people need to take time to remember.

"We really don't think about what they do, unless a tragedy happens like happened that brought this tournament on, it really brings things home. The police, they save us, so it's a good thing," Brown said.

Cayton said there's no final word on how much the new fund will have in it, but she did say that Monday's event will put thousands of dollars in to assist those families.
