Rep. Nick Rahall, D-W.Va., Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va. and Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., announced a federal grant for Huntington Junior College to train and place students in real-time writing careers for captioning services in video programming.

Huntington Junior College is one of only 50 schools in the nation certified by the National Court Reporting Association. The grant is a $266,175 two-year grant by the U.S. Department of Education and will be used to train and place 20 high school students as well as 25 adults per year in real-time writing careers. The grant also will offer retraining to 80 court reporters in West Virginia.

Rahall, Rockefeller and Manchin said the grant and training it provides is important in growing West Virginia's economic future.

Manchin said education is the most important investment a person can make, and by providing training for the necessary sills and experience, jobs will stay in West Virginia.

According to Rahall, federal investments in education and workforce training are essential to the state's economic future and can equip the workforce with skills that open doors to new economic opportunities and better paying jobs.

The U.S. Department of Labor has predicted the growth rate of real-time writer jobs will grow 14 percent between years 2010 and 2020.
