Students and businesses are getting their first look at Maid Silvia of the 77th Annual Mountain State Forest Festival.

Maid Silvia is Ashley Houchin.

Houchin has been touring Randolph County with her maids of honor and minor court.

On Wednesday she visited students at Beverly Elementary School.

Houchin is from Calhoun County and said it's exciting to continue the festival's tradition.

"I've enjoyed it. Going to the different businesses I've gotten many gifts. Going to the schools has been awesome, I want to work in the school system, so kids are my thing and I love going around, and their all so excited. You can't just brag about it enough," said Houchin.

Houchin will be officially crowned Queen Silvia by Governor Earl Ray Tomblin during ceremonies in Elkins on Friday.

In the evening, crowds filled Elkins Town Square for a talent show to see kids, teens and adults perform their talents of singing.

"Well, most of it's local people from around the state, and they just come and visit, you know, and they like the music," said resident Pam Kimble

Forest Festival plaques and money will be awarded Thursday evening. Winners will receive cash prizes.
