Coal production in West Virginia was down about 4 percent year-to-date for the week ending Sept. 28 and 6.8 percent for the 52-week period ending that day.

According to the weekly coal production estimates published by the Energy Information Administration, production in northern West Virginia increased 2.4 percent to 30.9 million tons year to date and 2.1 percent to 41.3 million tons for the 52 weeks. In southern West Virginia, production decreased 72 percent to 61.3 million tons year to date and 11.1 percent to 83.8 million tons for the 52 weeks.

Eastern Kentucky, which like southern West Virginia is considered part of the Central Appalachian coal producing region, saw an even greater decline. Production there fell 16.9 percent year to date and 22.4 percent for the 52-week period.
