Local legend teaches tennis and life lessons

Posted: Updated:

At the tennis courts in Bluefield kids come out to learn about tennis, but they also learn a lot about life. The person behind that knowledge is Roscoe Warner.

"My goal here is to teach them the love of the game of tennis, and we have fun," said Warner.

He holds practice at the courts four days a week where kids from all ages come to learn the game. The difference between his practice and others, is that his is completely free.

"He's a really nice generous person, because he doesn't have to make us do it for free. He just really cares about everybody that wants to play tennis," said Katie Miller, one of the tennis players under Warner.

Growing up, Roscoe received free tennis lessons. He stuck with it, and now, he just wants to pay it forward.

"I've been playing my whole life and my tennis instructor told me to pass it on, and that's how I got involved in passing it on to other kids," added Warner.

But it's not all about the game, he also is a mentor to the kids. He helps them with their homework, gives them self confidence, and for some he's even a father figure.

"He's a good support, where I don't have a father, he's just a good influence on me. He helps me a lot," said Laken Puckett, another one of Warner's students.

He's a big influence on the children, but the children are also a big influence on him.

Warner explained, "the funny things they say, the funny things they do, that just keeps me going."
