The Slab Fork Community Group will receive a $15,000 grant which will be used to build a new community park.

The grant will be presented by Sen. Mike Green, D-Raleigh, and Sen. Daniel Hall, D-Wyoming Oct. 8.

Beaver Coal Company has donated one acre of land in the community for the project, and the community is ready to begin the first phase of construction, which will include establishing the park area, constructing a picnic pavilion and installing a playground area.

"Our number one priority is the safety of children in Slab Fork and the surrounding communities," board member Dyane Corcoran said in a news release. "With the majority of homes immediately adjacent to Route 34, there are few places where kids can safely gather to play. … This funding will change that."

Fundraising and donation efforts currently are underway for the second phase of project construction, which will include: landscaping, fencing and biking trails.

The Slab Fork Community Group was established in May 2013 as a 501(c)3 organization for friends and neighbors to preserve and enhance its community. The group routinely hosts community clean-ups, dinners, fundraisers, contests and projects. The group also has developed a walking and biking trail and was selected as a project for the Boy Scouts of America's Service Project 2013.
