Pink will once again be the new blue at Mountwest Community and Technical College the week of October 14 as the school honors the memory of past employee, Karen Johnson, and her daughter, Jennifer Johnson Polo, with the 2nd Annual "Pink Out."

The event was originally created to fund a scholarship in honor of Johnson, a Mountwest employee for 27 years, who died in October 2011 after a long battle with breast cancer. Now the event also honors her daughter, Jennifer, who also passed away from breast cancer. Professor Donna Donathan and associate professor Janet Smith are co-chairs coordinating the Pink Out.

The event's primary purpose is to raise money for the Karen Johnson scholarship fund while also bringing awareness to the community about breast cancer. The week-long event is free, and anyone in the community is welcome to attend. The Pink Out will kick off with the survivor/support walk Monday at noon at the Mountwest campus.

Throughout the week, there will be live entertainment from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. There are numerous opportunities for attendees to donate to the scholarship fund. Raffle tickets will be on sale for prizes like a hunter's basket which includes a tree-stand, Vera Bradley items and various restaurant gift certificates.

Donathan said the event raised around $2,700 last year, surpassing its goal of $1,000. This year, a fundraising goal of $3,000 has been set. The scholarship is awarded to a male or female student who is has had cancer or is currently undergoing treatment for cancer.

Individuals who cannot attend the event but would like to make a donation can make checks payable to the Mountwest Foundation with Karen Johnson scholarship fund noted on the memo line.
