The Communications Workers of America and Frontier Communications announced Oct. 12 they had reached a second contract extension for their more than 1,600 employees in West Virginia.

The original labor contract expired Aug. 2, 2013, but Frontier requested an extension until Oct. 12, which CWA agreed to grant. The second, most recent extension will last until Jan. 18, 2013.

According to the CWA, agreements on "critical agenda items" have not yet been reached between the union and Frontier, but negotiations will continue.

"With the holiday season approaching, it was important to extend the current contract," CWA International Representative Elaine Harris said in a news release. "It gives our members one less thing to worry about during a busy time of year."

The contract covers former Verizon employees who became Frontier employees when Frontier Communications purchased Verizon's landlines in West Virginia in 2009. The employees, through CWA, have been negotiating a new contract with Frontier for the past four months.
