Christopher B. Howard, president of Hampden-Sydney College, visits West Virginia University to give the 2013 Neil S. Bucklew Lecture on Higher Education Administration on Oct. 22. His talk begins at 1 p.m. in The Erickson Alumni Center and is free and open to the public.

Howard is one of the youngest college presidents in the nation. He previously served as vice president for leadership and strategic initiatives at the University of Oklahoma. A retired lieutenant colonel in the Air Force Reserves, Howard earned a Bronze Star for service in Afghanistan. He is a Rhodes scholar, Aspen Institute Henry Crown fellow and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, where he serves on the Higher Education Working Group on Global Issues.

Nominated by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Howard serves on the National Security Education Program Board. He is a member of the Board of Regents at Baylor University and sits on the boards of the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges and the Council of Independent Colleges of Virginia. He is also a member of the Morehouse College Research Institute's Advisory Board.

Howard is a distinguished graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, Oxford University and the Harvard Business School. He is the first African-American president of Hampden-Sydney College, a private liberal arts college for men. It has been in continuous operation since classes began in 1775 on its historic campus 60 miles southwest of Richmond, Va.

Tom and Jean Clark endowed the Neil S. Bucklew Lecture Series in Higher Education Administration in 1998. Bucklew was WVU's president from 1986-1995 and is currently a faculty member in the College of Business and Economics.
