Authorities from Marion and Taylor counties have arrested a man after they said he is responsible for the death of an infant.

Captain R.J. Durrett of the Taylor County Sheriff's Department said Marcus Curtis Lewis, 54, is charged with death of an infant child after the child was pronounced dead at United Hospital Center on Sunday, October 13.

Hospital officials contacted the Harrison County Sheriff's Department, who then contacted the Taylor County Sheriff's Department, according to Sheriff Terring Skinner of the Taylor County Sheriff's Department. This was after hospital officials concluded that the child likely died in the Boothsville area of Taylor County.

Lewis was arrested in Carolina on Friday evening after state police and Marion County sheriff's deputies obtained a search warrant for his residence.

Due to the ongoing investigation, authorities are not able to release the child's cause of death at this time, according to Sheriff Skinner.

Investigators don't believe anyone else was involved but Sheriff Skinner said they can't rule out the possibility.
