BECKELY -

UPDATE:

Officials with Chick-Fil-A in the Beckley area announced on Thursday that the were able to raise thousands of dollars to support the fight against breast cancer.

59News own sales representative Geliliah Barksdale was recently diagnosed with breast cancer.  A fundraiser was held by the Chick-Fil-A stores at the Beckley Galleria and Crossroads Mall on Wednesday.  That fundraiser brought in $1,300 for the Barksdale Family and $895 for the American Cancer Society.

Both Chick-Fil-A stores donated 10-percent of their proceeds during regular business hours to the effort.  Donation buckets were also out to support the Barksdale family.  Chick-Fil-A will continue to collect donations throughout the rest of the week.

The battle against cancer often hits close to home. That is true for us here at 59News.  Wednesday, a local restaurant did what it could to help raise awareness - and money for one of our own.

Ten percent of every purchase made at Chick-fil-A on Wednesday will go to the American Cancer Society and a member of our own 59News family. Gelilah Barksdale,  a beloved 59news sales representative recently has been diagnosed with Breast Cancer and she will be traveling to Morgantown to undergo surgery.

The owner of Chick-fil-A said they felt it was important to help someone in our community.

"What the Barksdales has done for this community for over 30 years has just been huge and we just felt like we need to do something, so we decided to put something together like this," Richard Jarrell," Chick-fil-A said.

Gelilah is married to a well-known coach in our area and his student athletes volunteered at the Chick-fil-A event.

"He is the heart and soul of our team, just as being one of our coaches we just do as much as we can for him because he gives so much to us, so we just came to give back," Javonne Staunton a student athlete at the Greater Beckley Christian Academy.

Folks can stop by both Chick-fil-A locations in Beckley on Wednesday, October 23, 2013.
