ELKINS -

An Elkins High School student is raising money to help a K-9 at the Elkins Police Department.

Brandon Simmons, 17, got the idea of helping the K-9 after he attended the Junior Trooper Police Academy in 2011. There, he found out that a dog had died in the line of duty because of not having a vest.

Brandon Simmons created a senior project called "Vest for Macy."

He's raising money to buy a bulletproof vest for the dog.

Macy is three years old and has helped police get drugs off the streets.

So far, Simmons has raised more than $500.

The vest costs $849, but the company is allowing Simmons to purchase the vest for Macy at a discount.

"People don't realize that these K-9s are officers just as much as humans are. They feel just like we feel, and they'll put themselves on the line," said Simmons.

"Knowing that we're halfway there is a good feeling. It really shows a lot of maturity on his part. He's a senior in high school, he's a 17-year-old student. He's taking on something where he's raising almost a $1,000 to better someone else," said Angie Pritt, Simmons' mother.

A PayPal account has been set up if you would like to donate. Send donations to vestformacy@yahoo.com A special account is also setup at Citizens National Bank in Elkins.
