BUCKHANNON -

A local good Samaritan is being honored for being in the right place at the right time, and doing the right thing.

Ross Straight finished chopping wood, and then later decided to go out for routine jog on Country Club Road near Buckhannon. That's when the unthinkable happened.

Straight collapsed, the result of a blockage doctors later found in his heart.

"I didn't know anything about it until and hours later, and they told me that someone had started CPR, and the squad came and had lifeflighted him. Naturally I was very upset," said Molly Straight, Ross's wife.

That good Samaritan was Joshua Bush, a meter reader for Mon Power. He had just finished one job, and was heading to the next when he found Straight lying on the side of the road.

"[I] went up to him, and he was unresponsive. When I trained in the military, you think on your feet. You don't realize what's going on until you've already done it," said Bush.

For his efforts, the Upshur County Emergency Squad presented Bush a Heart Saver Hero Award on behalf of the American Heart Association. Emergency officials said it's important that everyone learn CPR.

"CPR classes, EMT classes, paramedic classes gives the confidence, they know if they come upon an emergency situation that they can do a life saving measure that can make a difference in person's life," said Keith "Skeeter" Queen, Upshur County EMS Agency Director.

Family members and EMT's said Josh is a hero in their minds.

"The more people that know the more lives that can be saved. It's just as simple as that. Just knowing it isn't enough you actually have to do it which is what Josh did," Straight said.

"I don't think it was a big deal at the time. My wife talked to me, and I realized it was big deal you just saved a human's life," Bush said.

Straight is still at Ruby Memorial Hospital and is doing well. Straight's wife said he will have to go through cardiac rehab, but will have deal with the blockage first. Doctors said Straight didn't suffer any heart damage.

The Upshur County Emergency Squad is offering CPR classes every third Saturday, starting at 9 a.m. The cost is $30 for certification.

A fund has been setup to defray medical costs because Straight is a self employed artist, and has no health insurance. To help, go to this website.
