COAL CITY -

A local country music singer and songwriter is one step closer to making her superstar dream a reality.  The 20-year-old from Coal City in Raleigh County will be competing in the Regional Texaco Country Showdown in Hershey, Pennsylvania Saturday.

Krista Hughes is hoping her original song, "Hazard" will win her a ticket to music city to sing under a national spotlight.  In August, Krista won the Texaco Country Showdown at the state level singing both songs she wrote herself.

"I figured they worked last time so hopefully they work this time as well," said Hughes.

She'll be competing against seven other acts from the Northeast region.  She said music has been a dream of her's since she was just a toddler... And she doesn't plan on giving up anytime soon.

"If this doesn't work out... I'm going to keep knocking on doors," she said.  And she's even recently joined a band on the side, with two friends who are also Raleigh County musicians.

"I've played with bands in the past but the musicians were always a lot older than me and I just couldn't relate," said Hughes.

Since she's been playing guitar Krista said she has been through about a dozen, but she said she always comes back to her Taylor. And come Saturday, it's the one she's bringing to the competition in Hershey.

Even if her lucky guitar doesn't deliver... She said at least she got to make southern West Virginia proud.

"If I don't win you know it's still an experience going up there I've made it farther than anyone else around here," she added.
