A home in Fayette County was invaded while the family was inside.

Now police are searching for the suspect on the run. 59News reporter Jessie Gavin spoke with neighbors on Burkholder Street in Oak Hill.

"There was a bunch of commotion. My girlfriend came in yelling saying there was a home invasion, which is less than 10 feet from our house. Some of our neighbors were out in their yards and were armed and were trying to make sure everything was okay," said neighbor Dr. Christopher Flint.

According to Fayette County dispatchers, this all happened around 8:30 p.m. Saturday at a home on Burkholder Street.

Right now, there is no word on what, if anything, the suspect took from this home.  Neighbors told 59News how surprised they are to hear of crime in their neighborhood.

"We live under the impression that it could never happen to me. It could never happen near by, these types of things happen on the other side of town, on the other street or a couple streets down," neighbor Jonathan Demello told us.

"On this street yes, but the way Oak Hill has deteriorated over the past 10 years, especially because of prescription drug abuse, it doesn't shock me that petty crime such as home invasions and car robberies are on the up tick," said Flint.

Through this crime, neighbors told us it has brought them together as a community.

"I'm a firm believer in community posses, community militias getting together on any level such as neighborhood watches to start reaching out to the neighbors to make sure we all have our best interests in mind," Flint said.

"I pride the police in how fast they responded, on the city, county and state levels," said Demello.

"Whether it be natural disasters, burglaries, robberies or break-ins, it's important the community stands beside each other and becomes aware of what's around them," Flint told us.

If you have any information on the suspect, contact Oak Hill Police.
