First lady Michelle Obama will be surrounded by Sesame Street characters and students from three schools, including North Elementary School in Morgantown, for an announcement about marketing healthier foods to children.

The announcement is scheduled for Oct. 30 at the White House, and the participating schools were selected because of their healthy snack options. The Produce Marketing Association and the Partnership for a Healthier America also will take part in the announcement.

Obama has called on stakeholders to leverage marketing to promote healthy products to children.  All schools will be required to follow the "Smart Snacks in School" nutrition standards starting next year, requiring vending machines and a la carte lines to be healthier.

Students from Magnolia Elementary School in Joppa, Md. will join students from Linwood Holton Elementary School in Richmond, Va. and the Morgantown students for a tour of the White House kitchen after the announcement along with a trip to the White House garden for some harvesting.

North Elementary School began its Panther Pride garden in Spring 2011, and it's been growing a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, including snake beans, black radishes and strawberries.

Several teachers have utilized the garden in teaching math, science, reading, writing and health. The school also has worked with the local farmers' market and conducted lessons on the value of pricing, marketing and selling produce at the market. North Elementary also started a world garden with a new variety of produce indigenous to the nearly 50 countries students at the school represent. The school also began featuring some of the garden items in the cafeteria for students.
