Former U.S. Sen. Carte P. Goodwin, D-W.Va., is keeping the political door open. He made that obvious in an Oct. 23 speech to the Ripley Rotary Club.

"I'm very, very interested in public service," said Goodwin, who was appointed to the Senate briefly in 2010 by then-Gov. Joe Manchin after the death of Sen. Robert C. Byrd. "I was approached this year, in all candor, about running for Sen. (Jay) Rockefeller's seat.

"The timing wasn't right for me and my family, but I'm still very passionate about giving back. I'm drawn to that and know the good that can be accomplished."

Goodwin was Manchin's chief counsel for four years in the governor's office. Goodwin also served as chairman of the West Virginia School Building Authority and on the Independent Commission on Judicial Reform. He has since returned to his family's Charleston law practice of Goodwin & Goodwin.
