WELCH -

State Police picked up an inmate on Friday who escaped from custody on Thursday.

Lanny Allen Markland, 31, was captured in the Northfork area just before 10 a.m. on Friday.  Markland was walking along a road when he was recognized by a former employee of the Stevens Correctional Center. That person contacted State Police, and when Troopers went to the area they found and arrested Markland.

Markland escaped while taking out the trash in the company of a law enforcement officer. Markland was able to take advantage of the confusion from around the accident and ran off. That started a search by multiple law enforcement agencies.

Markland is originally from Tennessee, but he was in the Stevens Correctional Center for second degree robbery out of Mercer County. McDowell County Sheriff's Deputies, Welch Police officers and West Virginia State Troopers participated in the search.
