After much speculation, West Virginia Auditor Glen Gainer announced his intentions to run for Congress.

Gainer planned two announcements Nov. 8, starting at 10 a.m. in Clarksburg at The Blue Bird Deli then at 1:15 p.m. in Wheeling at 1413 Eoff St.

Rep. David McKinley, R-W.Va., of Wheeling currently serves in the 1st Congressional District.

Gainer, a Democrat, was first elected the state's 19th auditor in 1992, was most recently re-elected in 2012. His father also served as state auditor, from 1977 to 1993.

"As state auditor, I never let finger-pointing, partisanship or name-calling stand in the way of getting results for the people of West Virginia," Gainer said in a statement. "And by working with Republicans and Democrats on commonsense solutions, we cut wasteful spending, protected our tax dollars and made government do more with less in order to create the right environment for businesses to create jobs."

Gainer and his wife, Susan, live in Parkersburg with their two sons, John and Joshua.

West Virginia Democratic Party Chairman Larry Puccio said in a statement he saw support for Gainer intensify after the partial government shutdown.

"Auditor Gainer has always shown responsible leadership, by streamlining payroll, inventory and purchasing for the entire state government," Puccio said. "Gainer's priorities have saved millions of tax payer dollars.

"Glen has proven that responsible leadership works in West Virginia, and I believe it will work in Washington."
