Negotiations between Cabell Huntington Hospital and the more than 800 employees represented by SEIU District 1199 lasted throughout the night Nov. 12, and a contract agreement was reached Nov. 13.

"The power of workers uniting to bargain a fair contract sent a resounding message that the employees of Cabell Huntington Hospital are professionals and their work has great value," Becky Williams president of the Service Employees International Union District 1199, who helped lead the negotiations for workers. "Hospital employees were inspirited by the solidarity demonstrated by their co-workers and used that energy to push back against extreme concessions that would have erased decades of gains made by workers."

The full details of the new, three-year contract are confidential, but according to a news release from the SEIU, workers were able to make gains in wages, improvement to job bidding language and organized workers at the Surgery Center into the bargaining unit.

"We value each and every employee, and we are proud of the professionalism displayed throughout the negotiating process that has allowed us to reach this agreement while maintaining our focus on providing our patients with the quality care they deserve and expect," said Cabell Huntington Hospital Media & Community Relations Manager Charles Shumaker. "Additionally, we wish to thank our community members for their patience and understanding while we worked toward an agreement that would position Cabell Huntington Hospital for a strong future in the always-changing health care industry."
