The West Virginia Department of Education has selected Sterling Beane Jr. as its chief technology officer, to serve as the state's lead visionary related to education technology and its future in West Virginia classrooms.

"I have had one foot in the education arena and another foot in the technology world for several years," Beane said. "As the West Virginia Department of Education Chief Technology Officer, I expect to be actively engaged with stakeholders from within and outside of K-12 education to create a shared statewide vision of technology integration in our schools.

"By identifying our opportunities and barriers, we can form a collective understanding of the direction we will take to increase student achievement and transform education through the use of technology."

Beane has more than 15 years of experience as a classroom teacher, technology specialist and county technology director. A native of Gassaway, West Virginia, Beane earned his bachelor's degree in education from Glenville State College.  He earned master's degrees in educational leadership and elementary education with an emphasis in educational technology from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and Salem International University.

Most recently, Beane served as a coordinator in the WVDE Office of Instructional Technology. As a coordinator, Beane oversaw the Tools for Schools technology program, the Technology Systems Specialist (TSS) Pilot Project and served as the technology liaison to the Office of Education Performance Audits, School Building Authority and other external organizations and entities.

Beane considers one-to-one computing, desktop and server virtualization, data center design, cloud computing, and applying analytics for data based decision making areas of immediate need.
