People in our area are holding out hope for the holidays, after a local Salvation Army is destroyed by flames.

Leaders at the Salvation Army in Southern West Virginia are hoping they can rebuild in Nicholas County.  They say they are stretched thin this holiday season, due to that fire and they are working to make sure families in our area are not forgotten.

It was February, when flames destroyed the Salvation Army in Summersville.

The Salvation of Southern West Virginia serves Nicholas, Webster, Wyoming, Raleigh, Fayette, Pocahontas, and Greenbrier counties.

"I think it's just a shame," said Jeremy Hughes of Nicholas County.

Leaders at the organization say $4,000 in donations were destroyed.

"We had a complete loss.  Nothing was really salvageable," said Robert Barber, Salvation Army Captain.

Fire investigators with the state fire marshal's office are not sure if the fire was arson, but Summersville Police did arrest two Craigsville men in connection with two other arsons, which authorities say were set during the same 24-hour period, as the fire at the Salvation Army.

The organization helps tens of thousands of people every year.  They provide food and utility assistance.  They also help people get food for Thanksgiving and gifts for Christmas.

Now people are hoping the Salvation Army, which has the motto "Soup, Soap, and Salvation" gets enough support so they can rebuild in Nicholas County, and more easily help people around here.

"The community is the army behind the army... Every penny is so appreciative, because that's what we use to help people," said Barber.

The Salvation Army in Nicholas County was able to get back some money through insurance. Fire investigators still have not pinpointed the cause.

The Salvation Army collects about 1/3 of its annual funding through its kettle campaign, which is going on now.  59News is told 82 cents of every dollar donated goes straight back to communities the Salvation Army serves.
