Logan County native and America's Got Talent Winner Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. is giving back to his community yet again.

Murphy recently announced a partnership with the Everyone with Diabetes Counts, or EDC program, which will coincide with National Diabetes Awareness Month. The program will offer free diabetes education classes throughout Southern West Virginia.

The West Virginia Medical Institute will coordinate the classes, which are designed to help participants take control of their diabetes. Nurses and community health workers will cover topics that include managing several aspects of diabetes, from nutrition and exercise to monitoring health through tests. The campaign theme is "Control your diabetes. Change your life."

"Being from southern West Virginia, I know many people have diabetes," Murphy said. "I want to get the message out that people can live healthier and happier lives by learning how to best care for themselves.

"America's Got Talent changed my life. These classes can change the life of people with diabetes."

The classes will be offered throughout 22 counties in southern West Virginia including Boone, Braxton, Clay, Fayette, Greenbrier, Jackson, Lincoln, Logan, Mason, McDowell, Mercer, Mingo, Monroe, Nicholas, Pocahontas, Putnam, Raleigh, Roane, Summers, Wayne, Webster and Wyoming.

Murphy will appear on billboards, record public service announcements and host information displays at his holiday concerts throughout the state.

Murphy's manager, Burke Allen, said Murphy is always looking for ways to give back to West Virginia.

"Diabetes is such an epidemic in our state and this seemed like a natural thing for him to support," Allen said. "We're very excited and hope to bring more awareness to the program."
