Update:

National Collection Week is over now and the area coordinator for Harrison, Lewis, and Taylor Counties said that all goals for the year were met and broken.

Fellowship Bible Church in Harrison County collected 7,696 boxes.

All three counties together collected nearly 12,000 boxes.

The holidays are fast-approaching and that means that Operation Christmas Child is starting to send gifts overseas to children who are less fortunate.

"It reaches out to children who have nothing around the world, they are hurting children and to send them a gift is just a blessing," said Linda Simon, the church relations coordinator for Operation Christmas Child.

Samaritan's Purse manages Operation Christmas Child and many churches in the area collect boxes and have "packing parties."

Fellowship Bible Church is the main drop-off location for Harrison, Lewis, and Taylor counties, and it has a goal in mind this year.

"We collect items all year long and we gather them all together here at our collection site and we pack boxes all week. We're hoping for 2500 this year," Simon said.

The week of November 18 through November 25 is National Collection Week for Operation Christmas Child.

Fellowship Bible Church has a large assortment of items that can be packed into shoeboxes and sent overseas.

If you want to help, you can either go there and fill a box or make your own at home with a few key items you'll want to include.

"Paper and pencils, crayons, coloring books, sharpeners, we like to put a stuffed animal in to give that child something to cuddle something to hold, we like to put a little bit of candy in and just a few small toys," explained Simon.

Boxes can also include toothbrushes and toothpaste, clothes, bags, and shoes.

The boxes should be for either a boy or a girl and for one of three age ranges: 2 to 4, 5 to 9, or 10 to 14.

Many volunteers were at the church Tuesday to pack boxes.

"I think I enjoy most seeing the amount of donations here that people bring and it's just overwhelming to have a store with almost an endless supply. It's amazing to see how many people from several different churches come together and donate," said Amanda Hill, a volunteer.

Mike Holyfield is another volunteer that dedicated his time on Tuesday to pack boxes.

"Seeing and knowing that someone less fortunate than we are is going to get something. There are many children and even adults that don't get anything at Christmas time and it's a way to share what God has given us," said Holyfield.

The team in Bridgeport will pack boxes and collect supplies all week.

Simon said they'll accept any donations, from empty shoeboxes, to toys and stuffed animals, and monetary donations.

You can bring items to Fellowship Bible Church in Bridgeport.
