Cabell Midland High School in Cabell County has regained its position as the largest school in West Virginia, based on October head count enrollment data posted on the West Virginia Department of Education website.

Midland reported 1,885 students in grades 9 through 12 on the second Monday of October, slightly higher than Parkersburg High School's 1,866. The next largest schools in the state are Morgantown, Wheeling Park and Huntington high schools.

The smallest school of general attendance was Valley Head Elementary School in Randolph County, with 37 students in grades K through 5.

Overall, public school enrollment fell this year to 281,015, from 282,301 a year ago.

Monongalia County showed the greatest net growth, with 163 more students than a year ago. It was followed by Putnam, Cabell and Jefferson counties. Kanawha County, the largest school system in the state, had the largest net loss, followed by Logan, McDowell and Mercer counties.

In terms of percent growth, the leaders were Summers, Monongalia and Putnam counties, with Gilmer, Clay and Webster counties having the largest percentage losses.

More students were enrolled in kindergarten than any other grade. As usual, enrollment jumps from eighth grade to ninth grade as students leave private schools or home schooling and enter high school, then declines as students drop out.
