FAIRMONT -

Nine schools from our area participated in the 2013 RESA Seven Science Bowl at Fairmont State University on Tuesday.

The Science Bowl is prior to the 2014 National Science Bowl, a tournament-style academic competition challenging students in the fields of science and mathematics.

In support of the National Science Bowl, the U.S. Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory will once again host the competition.

The students participated in a double elimination competition at FSU, and were asked a variety of collegiate level questions.

The teams that placed first, second, and third will move forward to the West Virginia State Science Bowl competition at West Virginia University in February.

"We want to encourage, along with Fairmont State University, kids to show their knowledge and their skills in the math and science fields. It's always very impressive to see the students compete throughout the day with the questions that are given," said Shannon Carnes, RESA 7.

Bridgeport, Clay-Battelle, Fairmont Senior, Lewis County, Morgantown, Notre Dame, Philip Barbour, South Harrison, and University High Schools all participated in the competition.

All nine schools were offered on a first come, first serve basis to bring a second team to the competition. Several of the schools took advantage of the opportunity.

We will post the results from the competition once they become available.
