More Bears Killed on the Road in Virginia

Posted: Updated:

More bears are being killed in Virginia as the animals cross the highways.

Leaders with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries say the animals are crossing the road looking for food.

So far, 58 bears have been killed on Virginia roads this year.   That's up from 38 in both 2009 and 2011.

Experts speculate an acorn shortage may be forcing the bears to venture farther into human civilization looking for food.

A recent report also says sightings of bears have also been more frequent.

Game and Inland Fisheries officials say a mother bear and three cubs appeared in Harrisonburg in October.   They were tranquilized and relocated.
