According to Richlands Police Chief Frank Dorton, officers responded to a home on Roberts Street in Richlands on Tuesday.   When they got there, they found a woman, identified as Candace Honaker, 55, of Richlands, lying next to the road.

Dorton says Honaker had been assaulted and had severe head injuries.   Officers then went to 122 Roberts Street, lot 2, to the home of a Leonard Vandyke.

When officers arrived, they found signs of a fight in the home.   They discovered Joshua Vandyke, 29, of Richlands were having an argument when Joshua Vandyke allegedly began to assault Honaker.

Chief Dorton said another person in the home tried to stop the assault when he, too, was allegedly assaulted by Vandyke.     Honaker escaped to the roadway where she was found by police.   She was treated at the scene by Richlands Fire and Rescue and transported to Bristol Regional Medical Center by Med-flight.

Joshua Vandyke is charged with Aggravated Malicious Wounding and Assault and Battery. He is being held in the Tazewell County Regional Jail currently without bail.   According to the Richlands Police facebook page, investigator Jerry Gilbert and Paul Little with the Richlands Police Department are in charge of the investigation.
