MORGANTOWN, WV -

The Association of Public and Land-grant Universities has honored a West Virginia University Extension Service health promotion specialist with the 2013 Northeast Region Excellence in Extension Award.

Elaine Bowen was recognized for her work with high-impact programming and partnerships at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., during the national APLU conference.

Bowen has been with WVU Extension Service for 35 years and has developed initiatives such as community-based walking groups and healthy lifestyle education classes.

Bowen earned her bachelor's degree in home economics education from Virginia Tech. She later received two degrees from WVU: a master's in family resources and a doctorate in educational leadership.

She is a licensed dietitian and certified family and consumer science professional.

The award comes as a precursor to the 100th anniversary of the Smith-Lever Act, which established Cooperative Extension programming at the state's land-grant universities such as WVU.
