    A case that began almost a year ago lead to a guilty plea in Kanawha County court on Friday, Aug. 29, 2014. Deveron Patterson, 26, of Raleigh County pleaded guilty to a First Degree Murder charge in connection with the death of Kareem Hunter in Sept. 2013.

GPA: 4.03

Activities and achievements: Zachary has played football since he was a freshman and has been on the varsity team for the past three years. He lettered last year, earned all-county honors and served as a captain of the team. Zachary spent two years as part of the marching band and concert band. He's in the National Honor Society and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and he serves as chairman of Operation Christmas Child. He was selected by school faculty as a student of the month, and he helped his school's engineering and math quiz bowl team win a state championship last year.

Plans: Zachary's goal is to enroll in the Honors College at West Virginia University and pursue an undergraduate degree in chemical engineering. He also would like to go on to graduate school.
