FRENCH CREEK -

If you want to make some memories this holiday season, having a real Christmas tree inside your home may be the answer.

West Virginians are being encouraged to buy local real Christmas trees.

There are 30 Christmas tree farms in West Virginia. The state's Division of Forestry and Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin is asking residents to buy trees from one of those farms.

Ron Fowler runs French Creek Christmas Trees. He said it takes about seven or eight years for a seedling to grow to Christmas tree size. The first tree was harvested in 1990, and since then they've added more to make sure no one misses the joy of a real Christmas tree.

"The people who are coming to the farm are people who brought their children in the early 1990's, now we have those children bring those children so we got three generations coming to create memories of going out and getting their Christmas trees," said Fowler.

The 'choose and cut' type of Christmas tree farms across the state provide information including location, hours of operation, species, along with sizes and services available at each farm. Enjoying a real Christmas tree is an experience with nature.

"It kind of goes back to the old days of selecting trees from the woods where you would go into the woods and get a tree, but that's not available to people anymore. So what we have here simulates, going out, and choosing yours out of the wild," Fowler said.

Unlike fake trees which cannot be easily reused and end up in landfills, real trees have many uses after Christmas.

"Cities and towns do collection where they take them to an area and mulch them up. We personally take ours, and I tie it to the bird feeder just let the birds use it why they're using the bird feeder after Christmas. It's a continued use and after we get done with it, I just take it out and recycle it," Fowler said.
