---Giles County won state title---

The Giles County football team won the Virginia High School League 2A state title after a 20-19 win over Brunswick in overtime Saturday.

But it didn't come easy, the Spartans were down by 6 late in the fourth quarter, when Giles' Tyler Perdue threw a deep pass to Dakota Shrader who pulled down an amazing catch with just one second left in the game that tied it up. All Giles needed was an extra point to win the game, but the PAT was no good and the game was sent into overtime

With both teams on the board in OT, it came down to a missed PAT from Brunswick that gave the win to the Spartans.

"I'm just tickled to death for our kids, our school, our community, just a great place to be to watch football to play football and to coach football, just a great great place, Giles County and Pearisburg, and all the area that serves Giles High School," said Jeff Williams who won his first state title as head coach.

The win was Giles fourth state title in school history.

---Marshall's Kareem Canty named freshman of the week, again.---

Marshall fell to West Virginia Saturday 74-64 but despite the loss, the Herd's Kareem Canty made quite a statement earning him Conference USA's freshman of the week.

This is the 3rd week straight he has received this honor, after playing 39 minutes in the game against WVU. He had 16 points and 9 assists. He also added 3 steals to that stat sheet and held Mountaineer standout Juwan Staten to only 4 assists.

Canty is the first freshman to get the award in 3 consecutive weeks.
