NHL games getting more dangerous?

Posted: Updated:

The NHL is known for being a hard hitting sport but this year seems to have more penalties and suspensions than in years past.

The most notable so far was Boston's Shawn Thornton's attack on Pittsburgh's Brooks Orpik that landed him a 15 game suspension.

Tuesday night another incident on the ice raised some eyebrows.

In the Capitals/Flyers game, Tom Wilson came in at full speed and had a huge hit on Philadelphia's Brayden Schenn sending him into the boards at an awkward angle.

Schenn in visible pain, came out of the game with what the flyers announced as an "upper body injury."

Wilson was slapped with a 5 minute major penalty, and Philadelphia won the game 5-2.

After the game Capitals coach Adam Oates defended his player and said that he believes it was a clean hit.

Wilson will have a phone hearing with the league Thursday that could result in a suspension of 5 games or less.
