Almost everyone has heard the saying "There's no place like home for the holidays".

Throughout the next couple of days, millions of people will be heading to their Christmas destination.

"We are from Erie, Pennsylvania. We are heading to Charlotte, North Carolina to have Christmas with our children and our grand babies," said Paula Meason, traveling for Christmas.

"This is kind of a special year because we just retired in April and this is the first Christmas in 37 years that we are able to spend with our grand babies," said Randy Meason, traveling for Christmas.

AAA said between motorists visiting families and last minute holiday shopping, our highways are busier than ever.

"AAA is projecting that we will probably service close to four million road service calls. Most of those will be battery jumps, particularly in the areas where the weather is cold. Tire changes and surprisingly a lot of lock outs," said Wayne Northey, AAA West Virginia Region President.

AAA projects more than 94 million people are expected to travel more than 50 miles to get to their destination this Christmas. There are a couple of safety tips you can follow to make sure your trip goes smoothly.

Be sure to prepare your vehicle for long distance travel. This includes checking your windshield wipers and fluids.

Be sure to plan ahead. You should know exactly where you are headed and how long it will take you to get there.

AAA also recommends that you bring along an emergency kit.

"Make sure your windshield wipers are working properly. Make sure you have adequate wiper fluids. Have your radiator checked to make sure its in good condition and just general common sense things," Northey said.

AAA said despite the constant warnings about drinking and driving, especially during the holiday season, one in three crashes ends in death.

"Not too long ago there was a study done that showed that 20 percent of adults admitted to having driven when they felt that perhaps their alcohol level was too high. This is the time of the year where we feel this is most prevalent," Northey said.
