Christmas is only 2 days away and many of you chose Monday to pack up and hit the road.

AAA projects this season to see the highest travel volume ever recorded. 59News reporter Jessie Gavin spoke with AAA and gives us the complete travel outlook.

Its most recent travel forecast indicates 94.5 million Americans plan to travel in the next few weeks. Last year a million fewer Americans journeyed home for the holidays.

AAA District Office Supervisor Crissy Gray explained why more people are opting to make the expedition.

"Gas prices this year are down 4 cents. Last year we were at $3.38 per gallon and this year we are at $3.34 so we are seeing a little bit of ease at the pump so that makes it happy for the holiday seasons to travel," Gray said.

We asked travelers themselves where the cheapest gas prices have been on their holiday excursions.

"Here is the highest we've seen, up in Ohio it's $3.19 and in Kentucky we paid $3.29," Ohio motorist Eugene Wood.

We saw rain in Beckley Monday afternoon, that could quickly turn to snow and black ice later on. AAA told 59News how inclement weather impacts your holiday plans.

"The weather does play a factor into it. I think everybody is very mindful and we get a lot of calls asking what the roads are like," said Gray.

During last year's holiday season, AAA's Emergency Response Service team responded to nearly 500 calls from West Virginian motorists for assistance.

"What they mostly respond to is flat tires and if cars are disabled on the side of the road, just to tow it to a safe place as well as if they run out of gas or if they have mechanical issues," she said.
