The AAA travel forecast indicates 94.5 million Americans plan to journey 50 miles or more from home during the year-end holiday season. This marks the fifth consecutive year of increases and the highest travel volume ever recorded for the season.

Where are they going?
The AAA travel forecast includes West Virginia area travelers in the South Atlantic region. Nearly 16 million travelers in the South Atlantic region plan to hit the road during the year-end holiday season. Warm weather destinations including the Orlando/Disney area and Mexico, especially Cancun, are among the most requested by Charleston area travelers.

Tis the season of distractions
With nine in ten holiday travelers driving to their destinations, and increased driving activity from local motorists finishing their holiday preparations, AAA is appealing to everyone on the road to be extra diligent. AAA District Office Supervisor, Christina Rollyson, reminds motorists "this is the season of distractions and drivers need to make a concentrated to effort to stay focused while driving. Although your hands may be on the wheel and your eyes on the road, it's easy to lose focus and become mentally distracted reviewing holiday gift shopping lists and party preparation lists. Drivers need to be especially cautious pulling into and out of parking spaces while shopping."

AAA Roadside Rescue Teams stand ready to assist drivers
Last year during the holiday season AAA's Roadside Rescue Team responded to nearly 500 calls from West Virginia area motorists for assistance. The highest number of requests was for battery service, followed by tire troubles. This time of year also generates more requests for lock service. With the hustle and bustle of the holidays, AAA usually sees an increase in the number of drivers accidentally locking keys in vehicles.

Gas Prices
The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline today in the Charleston area is $3.26, compared to last year's price of $3.34. The resolution of production concerns at the Gulf Coast refineries and limited seasonal demand have both contributed to the falling national average. Motorists in the majority of states continue to enjoy prices that are cheaper than one year ago approaching the holidays.
