Black Monday, VT bowl game prep and Bluefield vs. Graham

Posted: Updated:

---Black Monday didn't go well for many NFL coaches and many were let go.

Among the teams that fired coaches today included the Lions, Vikings, Buccaneers, and the Browns.

Washington Redskin's Mike Shanahan also got the pink slip today after a disappointing 3-13 regular season. Turnovers have been high in Washington with owner Dan Snyder who, after Shanahan's replacement, would have hired 8 head coaches in his 16 year tenure.

"When you take a look at what the franchise has done, you take a look at the opportunities that were giving to you as head football coach and your staff, you can't feel better. I'd also like to thank the players, they have given me everything they've got in the past 4 years and I thank them for it," said Shanahan in a press conference.

The Redskins ended their season with 8 straight losses.

---Virginia Tech is in El Paso Texas gearing up for the Sun Bowl against UCLA.

The Hokies are 8-4 on the year while the Bruins are 9-3. Virginia Tech plans to debut Junior Michael Branthover at kicker.

This will be the 4th kicker that the Hokies have used this season since the dismissal of starter Cody Journell from the team.

Branthover has never attempted a field goal or extra point in a game.

Kickoff is Tuesday at 2 PM on CBS.

---Girls basketball: Bluefield defeated Graham tonight at the Brushfork Armory 47-41.
