GRAFTON -

Mary Poe will retire from leading the West Virginia National Cemetery this Friday.

Poe worked for the government for 35 years and moved to Grafton in 2008 to take the position as the director of the National Cemetery.

She said her job has allowed her to help thousands of veterans get the recognition they deserve and be buried with honor.

She said it is extremely important to her to be there for families during the entire process, because it is one of the hardest things they will ever do in their lives.

"I come from a family of veterans. My father is a veteran and he is buried at a National Cemetery and that's actually what made me decide that I wanted to be a part of it. When I saw how they were taking care of my mom during the process and how they take care of my fathers grave, it was something that I wanted to be involved in," Poe said.

Poe was recognized by the Patriot Guard on Thursday for her efforts over the years.

"These guys and the things they do everyday for veterans. For them to even think that I have stepped up to the plate and done what is expected out of me is just amazing," she said.

The search for Poe's replacement is underway.
