Do you have the flu or just the common cold?

The month of January lands us right in the middle of the worst part of Flu season. Doctor's clinics are seeing record amounts of patients with the flu and flu-like symptoms in the past few weeks.

But what if you just have a common cold and there's no need to make a trip to your local physician?

Candy Hurd with the Beckley-Raleigh County Health Department told 59News how you'll know the difference.

"When it's a cold you'll have more mild symptoms such as a sore throat, a runny nose or a cough. It may last for a few days or a week but with the flu it usually comes on a bit faster and the symptoms will be more severe, and you'll also have body aches with the flu," Hurd said.

The flu and the common cold are both respiratory illnesses caused by different viruses. Hurd said it's not too late to come in and get your flu shot.
