BECKLEY -

A Raleigh County police department is making strides to save tax-payers money and keep the environment clean.

Four cruisers in Beckley's Police Department have been converted to hybrid cars running on both regular gasoline and propane gas.
They'll be filling up with the area's only propane gas pump, at the Little General BP station on Harper Road.

"The vehicles run better the engines run smoother its cleaner burning there's less maintenance cost on the engines so their a little apprehensive at first but they'll get used to it," said Beckley Police Chief Tim Deems.

Deems said he hopes to save 30 to 40% off their current gas costs. The money for the conversion came from a grant made possible by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
