The Wheeling Jesuit University community will take part in a statewide candlelight prayer 6 p.m., Jan. 21 near the shore of Wheeling Creek on the WJU campus to stand in solidarity with neighbors affected by the recent chemical spill in Charleston.

The service is being organized by the CARE campaign (Citizens for Real Enforcement) statewide. CARE is inviting all West Virginians to take part in a prayer service near their local waterways and pray for clean water. In addition, the service is a way for communities to stand together during this time of crisis to show how much clean water means to the state.

"The event also will focus on the need for our state, nation and world to protect our water and critically look at practices that are currently harming our environment and citizens," said Beth Collins, director of the Appalachian Institute at Wheeling Jesuit.

WJU Campus Ministry and the Appalachian Institute are hosting the event locally. Students and the WJU community will gather near the creek behind Bishop Schmitt Field. The service should last about 20 minutes.

WJU Campus Ministry is also donating all money collected at their 11 a.m., 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. chapel services on Jan. 26 to residents who were out of work during the crisis and need to replace any plumbing fixtures.
