Facts and figures about West Virginia's diverse counties and how they stack up against other states:

  1. West Virginia, with a population of 1.8 million, has 55 counties. Wirt has the smallest population, with about 5,700 people, and Kanawha has the largest, with about 193,000 people.
  2. Nebraska also has a population of 1.8 million. It has 93 counties. Ten of those counties have a population of fewer than 1,000 people.
  3. Kentucky has 120 counties with a population of 4.3 million. The smallest county has a population of 2,300.
  4. Highland County has the smallest population in Virginia: 2,500; there are more black bears in Highland County than people, according to the county association director in Virginia. The Old Dominion has 95 counties.
  5. Minnesota, a geographically large and mostly rural state, has 87 counties; the smallest has a population of 3,400 people. Nineteen counties have a population of fewer than 10,000 people, and at least two counties are without a single stop light.
  6. Texas has the most counties of any state: 254. Texas has a population of 26 million. Loving County, with a population of 62, is the smallest county in Texas.
  7. The county with the largest population in California is Los Angeles, with 10 million residents. The smallest county has a little more than 1,000 residents.

  9. Georgia, with a population of 9.9 million, has 159 counties. Eight have a population of fewer than 5,000 people; the smallest is Taliaferro, with a population of 1,680. Fulton has the largest population, with 977,773 people. Georgia has eight county-municipal consolidated governments.
  10. Colorado, with a population of 5.2 million, has 64 counties, including four home rule counties, two of which are consolidated city and county governments (Denver and Broomfield). Last year there were votes in 11 counties to reduce the number of counties by succession. Advocates cited concerns about inadequate representation at the state capitol. Voters in five counties approved succession. It is unclear whether succession legislation will be introduced in the upcoming session of the Colorado Legislature.
