Summers County girls basketball named Honda Team of the Week!

Posted: Updated:

The Summers County girls basketball team has held up their reputation so far this year. With an impressive 11-0 record, the Lady Bobcats are ranked #3 in the AP girls basketball poll.

"Our team has good balance and because everybody knows our role is important it's easy to keep everybody hungry because everybody knows they contribute one way or the other," said girls head basketball coach and athletic director Wayne Ryan.

Last week Bluefield gave them a run for their money but Summers defeated the Beavers in an exciting 4 overtime game.

"The end of the 4th quarter and in the overtimes, they showed a great deal of determination and you know, you have to give them a lot of credit, that's an extremely hard thing to do, it's hard for both teams."

That determination has helped the Lady Bobcats get past many ranked opponents, and they're just getting started.

"We've beaten four of the four top ten teams already, and we're going to play Scott this week, that's another one. We're going to play Westside the next week so, we're putting ourselves in the fire and we're trying to prepare as a basketball team to be the best we can be by the end of the season."

Ryan has coached this team for over 20 years and with seven state championships in the past two decades, one thing that sets his program apart from others is consistency.

"We've had a lot of teams pop up and be great rivals for two or three years and then they went away, and they've had good basketball teams or tremendous talent come through for a short amount of time, but we've been successful for 26 and have stayed in the fight for 26 years."

The road to this point hasn't been easy for the girls, and with more big games ahead it's not getting any easier. But, with strong leadership and the support of Bobcat Nation, the team is ready.
